Rereading the Riot ActThanks to Blouin Artinfo Canada for putting Rereading The Riot Act, And On, Vancouver 2011 at the head of their just-published list of Canada’s Top Six Art Books for Fall. Rereading The Riot Act takes its title from a series of events curated by Anakana Schofield (better known as author of the acclaimed novel Malarky), part of which oddly coincided with the 2011 Stanley Cup Riot.

Rereading The Riot Act, And On, Vancouver 2011 is not an exhibition catalogue — it is an artists’ book, by Anakana Schofield and Jeremy Isao Speier, that draws on the history of protest in Vancouver, encompassing the 1930s “relief camps” and the 1980s Operation Solidarity near-general-strike, among other things. The “Rereading” in the title refers to the royal proclamation that still attaches to Canada’s Riot Act, and which was read in 1935 by Mayor Gerry McGeer’s to peaceful protesters in what is now Victory Square.

You can order a copy of the book online, or if you’re in New York City this week our co-publisher Publication Studio Vancouver has copies at the New York Art Book Fair (at MoMA PS1 in Queens — table Q58).
